NEWSLETTER No 1- August 21

Welcome to our very first newsletter! It’s a little late but we have been very busy, tasting, testing, packing and guiding.

First of all an introduction to us and what we do. We are two food enthusiasts with a long history of working in the local food business and food tourism. We are passionate about great quality local food and Armchair Tasting Tours is all about sharing that love and passion. The producers we champion create amazing food and drink and we want everyone to discover it. Food tours are a fabulous way to experience a place, its food culture and discover the local secret specialities. Usually on foot in a city or town a guide will take you on a journey to discover local dishes, history and those amazing places that all the locals love and frequent. Our tours are designed to give you a tour of Sussex, full of tastes and tales, introducing you to your new favourites and giving you the low down on the best the county has to offer.

The business began in 2020 during lockdown with our unique home food tours. We deliver boxes of delicious food and drink and zoom guide our tourers through a tasting. We also provide a self-guided tour for those who are all zoomed out. The obvious next step are hampers, full of local loveliness and accompanied by tasting notes. Checkout our website to find out more.

A New Tour

We have recently launched our third tour, so now you have a choice of 3. The original Sussex From Your Sofa and Not Just A Picnic are joined by the Some Like it Hot tour. Featuring some of the most delicious spicy food we can find in Sussex today, from spiced rum to relishes, cheeses and ending as every tour should with something a little sweet, this tour is designed for everyone, chilli fiend or not.

Exciting News

You may have seen on our instagram or Facebook page congratulations to Balcombe Dairy. They have won Best Blue Cheese at the Artisan Cheese awards for Balcombe Breeze. Their delicious soft creamy blue cheese has been a huge hit on our tours with everyone. Chris Hayes the cheese maker and his herd of Norwegian Red Holstein Crosses have done Sussex proud.

Recommendations

With lockdown lifting we are all excited to get out and about so here are some of our recommendations for a Summer foodie treat:

For a gourmet experience try Heritage in Slaugham owned by talented chef Matt Gillan famous for his Great British Menu winning goat dish. The cocktail menu is fabulous and the food is delicious.

For a pub lunch or dinner we highly recommend The Ram Inn in Firle. Site of a recent working lunch……we had delicious Brighton Blue cheese and beetroot salad, unbelievably gorgeous sticky toffee pudding and a fabulous cheese board. It’s a tough job..

If you enjoy a farm shop or want to discover some amazing local produce head to Rushfields Farm Shop with so much to offer, amazing cheese counter, make your own peanut butter, homemade pies and a great range of gluten free products to boot. Well worth a visit.

If you would rather enjoy the great Sussex countryside why not order one of our Not Just A Picnic Tours, everything for a picnic packed up with a tasting guide for a really special al fresco experience. Take it to Kingsley Vale, an ancient Yew forest with spooky Whomping Willow vibes, one of the many National Trust gardens in Sussex or hit the beach at Ferring or Goring for a low key paddle and picnic.

Have a great August, stay safe and don’t forget to spread the love for great local food and drink!
